This qualification outlines the reasons for safer manual handling and the legal requirements. Learners will develop an understanding of how risk assessments can improve safety, the theory of safe movement principles and how to reduce the risk of harm.

This qualification is suitable for all employees to raise their awareness of the risks of unsafe manual handling practices and for people who might have to carry out manual handling as part of their job, e.g. handling deliveries, parcels and boxes.

Learning Objectives:
The FAA Level 2 Award in Principles & Practice of Manual Handling (RQF) is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification, designed to cover the basic principles of manual handling.
The course covers:
• Common manual handling injuries
• Manual handling laws
• Responsibilities of employers and employees
• Risk assessments
• Safe movement principles associated with manual handling, including the body’s:
• Musculoskeletal system
• Centre of gravity
• Lever system
• Theory of safe manual handling principles, including:
• Preparing for a lift
• Solo lifting, carrying and lowering an object
• Team manual handling
• Manual handling equipment:
• Types of manual handling aids and equipment
• Maintenance and requirements for testing
Assessment & Certification
Practical assessment is on-going by the instructor, culminating with a written test. This qualification does not expire, but refresher training and keeping up to date with changes to policies and procedures is vital to keep the qualification current.
