Asbestos Awareness – ½ Day
The course is designed to give a brief outline to make delegates aware of the dangers and controls around the presence of asbestos.
The course will cover- the concept of the health effects of being exposed to asbestos, (mesothelioma, asbestosis), statistics surrounding asbestos, historical uses of asbestos and its properties, the types of asbestos that can be found, common found locations of asbestos, legislation surrounding asbestos, types of surveys that can be taken to find & control asbestos, emergency procedures for the discovery of asbestos, notification of removal & and how to remove asbestos. The course will also include videos and case studies to help ensure students have an interactive course.
Purpose
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, Regulation 10 requires every employer to ensure that adequate information, instruction, and training is given to their employees who are or who are liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees.

Who should attend?
Any employee, irrespective of level, the course will make them aware of their responsibilities for safety toward themselves, colleagues and others are potentially affected by asbestos.
Learning Objectives:
On successful completion of this course, delegates should be able to:
- Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and it’s effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke;
- Be familiar with types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings
- Know how to avoid the risks from asbestos by understanding;
- Where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work;
- What to do if suspicious materials are found;
- How to use appropriate workplace precautions, including the risk assessment process, or seek advice on workplace precautions, in respect of the risks of asbestos;
- Undertake work activities in a safe manner and without risk to themselves or others.
- Have an awareness of the general legislation in relation to health and safety and asbestos in particular.
- Procedures to be followed when coming into unintentional contact with ACM’s and an understanding of the appropriate emergency arrangements.
Assessment & Certification
Candidates will be assessed throughout the course by their participation and willingness to share of their experience. Successful candidates will be awarded certification which will detail the syllabus covered and that an appropriate standard has been achieved.
